IP Cameras

IP Cameras (Internet Protocol Cameras) use the same type of imaging process as standard cctv cameras(analog cameras). The big difference is that IP Cameras digitize and compress the video inside the camera, before output. Each IP Camera has its’ own unique IP address and is a device on an IP network. Video is output onto the connected IP network through a network port on the camera and can be received by PCs and other devices on the network with the appropriate decompression codec, software and permissions. Networks used can be LANs, WANs, Internet and wired, wireless or a combination.

IP cameras are available as small, low resolution, poor low light tolerance, low cost devices, intended for home/personal use and as better performance, higher resolution devices with sophisticated hardware compression, intended for business and professional use. Many high-end IP Cameras have mega-pixel imaging capabilities that allow video to be zoomed in many times before losing viewable resolution. By using sophisticated compression techniques, transmitted video can be compressed down to such a level that even mega-pixel camera video does not exceed the available bandwidth on the transmitting IP network.

For wireless transmission applications, IP video has huge advantages over standard analog video from cctv cameras, providing better range and better quality, in most cases.

IP Cameras can be used in very small networks (single camera) to very large and far flung network configurations of IP cameras, Hybrid DVRs, NVRs and Video Servers, using various IP networks (LANs, WANs, Internet, cabled and wireless) in one integrated solution.

Many see the future of video surveillance in IP cameras and IP networks, but at current levels of technology and prices, many installations are still best served by analog cctv cameras and DVRs. For some, the use of Hybrid DVRs and the addition of IP cameras to mainly an analog camera system, where it is difficult to run coaxial cable and/or where an extra level of zoom is needed, can provide the best solution in today’s market.
