A PC based DVR accepts analog video input from CCTV cameras through connections (ports) in a video capture card (or cards). There is typically one input connection for each camera and the number of connectible cameras can vary from four (4) to as many as forty-eight (48) or even sixty-four (64). Analog video is digitized and compressed within the DVR before being displayed and recorded. Recorded video can be searched for, selected and replayed. The DVR decompresses the video before displaying replays. Video compression and decompression can be accomplished either by software (in which case the DVR cpu does all the work) or by hardware chips on the capture board (in which case the main cpu loading is much less). Remote access of live and recorded video is normally available, under password control, through a LAN or Internet connection.
Hybrid DVRs are simply DVRs (primarily PC based but not necessarily) that will accept both uncompressed analog video input from CCTV cameras, through a video capture board, as well as compressed digital video input from IP Cameras or Video Servers through an Ethernet port. The relative number of analog and IP cameras supported is generally governed by a combination of hardware and software.
Sentry Security Systems Inc. offers two lines of hybrid DVRs – V Series DVRs and LP-Hybrid Series DVRs.
From software Version 8.2 onwards, all Sentry V Series DVRs are Hybrid capable. Hybrid properties are explained on the V Series webpage.
LP Series DVRs have both analog camera only versions as well as hybrid versions. LP-Hybrid Series DVRs are available as either 16 camera or 32 camera systems.
